PHILADELPHIA–During a rousing speech on opening night at the Democratic National Convention, First Lady Michelle Obama proudly declared, “When someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you do not stoop to their level. Our motto is when they go low, we go high.” The packed crowd jumped to their feet and roared with enthusiasm.
“I looked at my Hillary sign and asked myself, ‘What am I doing?'” said Terry Birenbaum, who drove all the way from Ohio to attend the convention. “I dropped it, pointed at Michelle, and screamed ‘I’m with her!'”
As the speech progressed, Mrs. Obama noticed the excitement in the audience and decided to vacate the teleprompter.
“I want a president with a record of public service, someone whose life’s work shows our children that we don’t chase fame and fortune for ourselves, we fight to give everyone a chance to succeed. And that is why I accept your nomination for President of the United States!” Mrs. Obama exclaimed. “This election is too close for comfort, my fellow Americans. So, I’m going to do this myself!” she added.
A confused but delighted crowd broke into a sustained applause, including President Bill Clinton.
Secretary Clinton refused to say if she plans on endorsing Mrs. Obama. Debbie Wasserman Schultz was not contacted for a comment. Mrs. Obama is expected to select her husband as her running mate.
