NEW YORK–Donald Trump’s vice presidential options took a major hit Wednesday when boxing promoter and personal friend Don King ended speculation that he would join the ticket as a running mate.
The presumptive GOP nominee also appears to be losing former basketball player Dennis Rodman and former basketball coach Bobby Knight, who according to multiple reports, both stated that would rather keep doing nothing. Trump had previously stated Rodman would be a “solid choice” given his relationships in North Korea and that Knight “based on his wins alone is qualified.”
King, a longtime friend of Trump’s, took his name out of consideration Wednesday, a day after Trump called him a “genius” and “a big league winner!” King would not confirm if he thought his murder conviction for stomping an employee to death may have wound up being a barrier in the vetting process.
Both the World Boxing Association and the National Basketball Association stated they do not have any more coaches or players to offer Trump at this time. Unconfirmed reports suggested that Trump is considering free agent Dwayne Wade but he is expected to play for the Chicago Bulls instead.
Trump said King will still speak at the Republican Convention because “naturally, why wouldn’t he?”
