NEW YORK — A leaked email from within Donald Trump’s campaign reveals the presumptive Republican presidential nominee has narrowed his selection for Vice-President of the United States to three candidates. In the email, Trump told former campaign manager Cory Lewindowsky that his first choice for VP is former basketball coach Bobby Knight followed by boxing promoter Don King and former NBA power forward Dennis Rodman. Sources suspect the leak is responsible for Lewindowsky’s firing from the campaign announced this morning.
Trump responded by firing off a series of tweets.
“They endorsed me, okay? They support Trump. We need toughness. We never win anymore. The great Bobby Knight had a 763-290 record at Indiana. He is a winner. I have the beauty pageant experience; he has the basketball.”
Knight, best known for his comment, ”I think that if rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it,” was available for comment but no reporters showed interest in speaking with him.
Knight was last in the public eye after he was fired from Indiana University for what the university’s president described as “uncivil, defiant, and unacceptable” conduct after he was seen choking a student.
When Knight first expressed interest in the campaign, Trump stated, “There is nobody whose support I would rather have. This is the best endorsement anyone could get. Nobody in the history of the country has ever received endorsements like mine. President Eisenhower never got endorsed by the great Bobby Knight!”
Don King, who has been sued by multiple boxers for fraud and has settled all suits out of court to avoid criminal convictions said he will consider a VP offer but refused to comment on why he would be Trump’s second and not first choice.
Mike Tyson, who was formerly represented by King, described him as “a wretched, slimy, reptilian motherf*cker. He’s just a bad man, a real bad man. He would kill his own mother for a dollar. He’s ruthless, he’s deplorable, he’s greedy and he doesn’t know how to love anybody.”
When asked about the Tyson quote, Trump tweeted, “Tyson sums up why King is a great choice! THANK YOU CHAMP!”
One of the three remaining reporters allowed to attend Trump’s press conference asked him for the rationale for selecting Dennis Rodman.
“I like the idea of Rodman. He is ‘my African-American.’ He has relationships with foreign leaders like Kim Jung Ill from wherever and will help me get the blacks,” Trump explained. “I will do it alone if I have to. Everyone just needs to be quiet. I am the only one who needs to talk,” he added.
Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said he disavows Trump’s selections but will continue to support the party’s nominee.
