Congratulations to Carolina Waterfowl Rescue (CWF) for winning last week’s $5 Friday contest. CWF received the most votes from their enthusiastic supporters. The praise from their community for the life-saving work they’re performing for animals is off the charts. Here is an excerpt from an interview with CWF’s Executive Director.
1. Why should people donate to Carolina Waterfowl Rescue?
We are an all volunteer group providing wildlife rehabilitation, animal rescue, and sanctuary to more than 3,000 animals per year. We specialize in birds including chickens and turkeys but we have 11 acres where we house a variety of other animals.
2. In what ways do you educate the public about being kind to all animals?
We deliver presentations, provide exhibits, and host educational seminars to help educate people about all animals. If an animal is misunderstood, we take that as a challenge to educate people. Turkeys are one of our favorites to introduce to people.
3. How many animals do you rescue each year?
We rescued 3,200 animals last year. Approximately 6o percent were wild animals that we raised, rehabilitated, and released. The other 40 percent were domestic, exotic, and farmed animals. We place them in other sanctuaries and do adoptions. We currently have approximately 200 adoptable animals looking for homes from parakeets to peacocks. We also have 200 residents who are permanent due to disabilities or other factors.
4. What do you want people to know about what you do?
Someone asked me yesterday how we managed to place several hundred roosters from a cock-fighting bust. Many people said it couldn’t be done but we did it. It was a lot of work but when we set our minds to accomplish something, nothing is impossible. We try not to say “we can’t” if it’s in our power to help a suffering animal. We do our best to help. We never quit!
