To the Staff at the Jim and Jan Moran Boys and Girls Club of Deerfield Beach, Florida,
As 2012 draws to a close, I want to acknowledge your work to improve the lives of children, families, schools, and our community. On the heels of the worst mass killing of school children in American history, the time could not be more apropos.
We will never know what doesn’t happen as a result of children spending time here with you — from the crime that was never committed because they were removed from temptation to the resolved feelings of loneliness in times of need — but we can imagine it.
We only know what we see:
You teaching children to treat each other and adults with kindness and respect.
You showing patience and listening to children when they need to be heard.
You inspiring children to reach their full potential and believing in their capacity for greatness.
You forgiving children for their mistakes and praising them when they show improvement.
You helping children with homework, providing them opportunities to exercise, and feeding them.
You showing children how to give back to their community.
You modeling the behavior you want to see in the children.
You caring and helping in every way possible.
Your job is more than job. The work you do will last forever as it manifests itself in a better world. The children you serve will one day look back on their experience here and say to their children and grandchildren with a smile, “I owe much of who I am to the people at the Boys and Girls Club.”
Thank you for making me feel so welcome here as a volunteer. It has been one of the greatest honors and most rewarding experiences of my life. I have endless respect and admiration for all of you and I am deeply grateful for the work you do. You are the unsung heroes of our time.
